International Women’s Day – Lewes District
A week of events will be held across Lewes District from 7 – 14 March 2009 to coincide with International Women’s Day (8 March) in celebrating the achievements of women.
These diverse events are about recognising the progress of women from the past, celebrating the successes of women today and continuing to work for equality for the women of tomorrow.

Programme of Events for 2009
7 – 14 March Week long activities
* 20th Century Women Artists exhibition at the Crypt Gallery, Seaford. Opening celebration on Saturday 7th from 12noon-2.00pm.
* Women’s Royal Voluntary Service Heritage Fund exhibition at the Hillcrest Centre, Newhaven.
* Oxfam, Women’s Institute and climate change exhibitions in Lewes Town Hall foyer.
* Women in Business information table at Newhaven Enterprise Centre.
Sunday 8 March International Women’s Day Newhaven Fort – 1.45pm for 2.00pm start
* Launch event hosted by Chair of the Council.
* Women’s Land Army get together and talk by historian Amy de La Haye in the School Room. Please be seated by 1.45pm for lecture at 2.00pm.
* Women’s Land Army exhibits.
* Women’s Institute stand.
* Women’s Royal Voluntary Service Heritage Plus exhibition.
* UNISON display.
* Reduced entry to Newhaven Fort on International Women’s Day – £3.80
Monday 9 March Newhaven Enterprise Centre – 2.00-4.30pm
* Sophie Mahir (Women in Business Ambassador) workshop.
* For women thinking about starting a business, changing career or going back to work.
Wednesday 11 March Newhaven Enterprise Centre – 6.00-8.00pm
* Sophie Mahir networking event.
* Social evening with ‘My journey’ speaker.
* Light refreshments provided.
Wednesday 11 March Lewes Town Hall – 7.30pm
* Women, poverty and climate change lecture by Oxfam plus ‘Sisters of the Planet’ film in the Yarrow Room. Doors 7.15pm for 7.30pm start.
* Women’s Institute information stand.
Thursday 12 March Lewes Town Hall – 7.30pm
* ‘Universal Declaration of Planetary Rights’ lecture by Polly Higgins, founder of Wise Women, in the Yarrow Room. Doors 7.15pm for 7.30pm start.
Friday 13 March Newhaven Enterprise Centre – 9.30am-12.30pm
* Sophie Mahir workshop.
* For women who want to grow their existing business.
Friday 13 March Hillcrest Centre, Newhaven – 10.00am-2.00pm
* Evacuee’s Day with Women’s Royal Voluntary Service Heritage Plus.
* Come share your wartime stories with local school children.
* ‘Timespan’ will bring the history of World War II alive.
* Wartime lunch provided.
Saturday 14 March Lewes Town Hall – Doors 11.15am
* Frock Swap in the Lecture Room (Fisher Street entrance). Doors open 11.15am. Swap starts midday. Finishes 3.00pm.
* Re-made demonstration by TRAID.
* ‘Swap until you drop! Reinvent your wardrobe for free and reduce waste’
