Celebrating International Women’s Day: 5 March 2009
The KCL Women’s Network in partnership with the University of the Arts is hosting a special meeting to celebrate International Women’s Day on the theme of ‘Fashion, gender and body image’.
This is a free event to which all male and female staff and students of the College are invited to attend.
The meeting will be held on Thursday 5 March 2009 from 11.30 – 14.00 in the Henriette Raphael Function Room, Henriette Raphael House, Guy’s Campus
Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
Programme
At the meeting we will hear from a distinguished line up of experts who will explore current key debates on the topic of fashion, gender and body image.

11.45 Welcome and Introduction, Anne Marie Rafferty, Head of Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery, King’s College.
12.00 Liz Hoggard, Columnist for the London Evening Standard will consider whether it is possible for women to be passionate about ‘fashion’ without conforming to traditional images of beauty and body image.
12.40 Reina Lewis, Centenary Professor of Fashion Studies, London College of Fashion will consider why the dress and self-presentation of Muslim women is the topic of such heated debate in the UK today.
13.20 Pamela Church-Gibson, Reader in Cultural and Historical Studies, London College of Fashion will explore the ways in which young girls are socialised to have particular views of body image.
