International Women’s Day St Albans
St Albans City and District Council will be joining thousands of organisations across the world to promote and celebrate International Women’s Day on Monday 9th March 2009, with an awareness event in the reception area of the council offices.
Between 10am and 3pm, there will be stalls from local and national women’s groups, handicraft displays and henna painting to name a few of the attractions, so do come along.
If any womens’ organisations would like to participate in the exhibition please contact the council via e-mail: Momotaz.Rahim@stalbans.gov.uk or ring tel: 01727 819463.
An exhibition showcasing photographs and mini biographies of influential and powerful women from around the world, will also be on display at the Museum of St Albans (tel: 01727 819340, e-mail history@stalbans.gov.uk), and St Albans central library from the 2nd to 9th March 2009.
The first Women’s Day was celebrated in America on the 28th February in 1909. International Women’s Day (IWD) has been observed since the early 1900′s and is a global event, which is traditionally celebrated on the 8th March every year.
IWD has grown from strength to strength and annually on 8th March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements.
Since then women’s organisations and governments around the world have also observed IWD on 8th March, by holding large-scale events in honour of the advancement of women, and reminding people of the need to ensure that women’s equality continues and is maintained in all aspects of life.
