International Women’s Day 2009

Comedy event for Peterborough International Women’s Day

A host of top comediennes will combine to bring Peterborough a special night of fun and laughter at the Broadway Theatre on 7 March. Peterborough International Women’s Day steering committee has teamed up with the Broadway Theatre for the Saturday, 7 March event.

Leading the performers is Shazia Mirza, who will be joined by three other female stand-ups to make this year’s Women’s Day in Peterborough extra special. Shazia shot to fame in 2001 with her famous post-September 11 joke: “I’m Shazia Mirza – at least that’s what it says on my pilot’s licence”. As a result, the persona of the “Asian comic in a headscarf” stuck. Since then she has been wowing audiences across the country and her popularity has grown steadily. Mirza began stand-up comedy at the age of 25, after an abortive career as a science teacher. She said her parents’ favourite comedians were Kenny Everett, Frankie Howerd and Dave Allen. Even now, whenever she performs in Birmingham, her mother will watch all her shows.

Joining her on the night will be Isma Almas – a mother of two from Bradford, who uses humour to dispel the myths about Asian women.

Also, Joanne Lau – a UK-based Chinese Canadian comic known for her strong writing and rock solid gags.

And, finally, Andi Osho – who, since winning Nivea Funny Women 2007, has gone from strength to strength appearing on TV comedy shows such as Russell Brand and Friends and Comedy Lab.

Committee chairwoman Helen Walkinshaw said: “It’s harder to prove yourself as a funny woman than as a funny man in this country, so all the performers are really inspirational.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Broadway for their support, as this show really wouldn’t have been able to go ahead without them.”

The event is sponsored by Awards for All and Peterborough Racial Equality Council.

Tickets cost £15 each.
