International Women’s Day Hull
8th March 2009 from 9:00 – 17:00
Queen’s Dock Chambers, Queens Dock Avenure, Hull, HU1 3DR
International Women’s Day is an occasion marked by women’s groups around the world. This date is also commemorated at the United Nations and is designated in many countries as a national holiday. When women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate their Day, they can look back to a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development. The idea of an International Women’s Day first arose at the turn of the century, which in the industrialized world was a period of expansion and turbulence, booming population growth and radical ideologies. The event originated in 1909 and continues to be celebrated every year worldwide.
Organised by Hull Women’s Centre which is run by women for women and provides information services and activities that will enable women to take control of their lives. Hull Women’s Centre is a registered charity and is a place especially for women and their children

York International Women’s Week: 7 – 14 March 2009
Around the world, International Women’s Day (IWD) marks a celebration of the economic, social, cultural and political achievements of women. The growing international women’s movement has helped make IWD a special day for promoting women’s rights and participation in political and economic processes. Celebrated on 8 March, International Women’s Day (IWD) is the global day connecting all women around the world and inspiring them to achieve their full potential. IWD celebrates the collective power of women past, present and future. International Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900s.
In York, organised celebrations got off the ground in 1993. Jill Pattenden and Anna Harland, who worked for York City Council Women’s Working Group, managed to raise £1500 from North Yorkshire Health Authority and York City Council to put together a full programme of free events with an enthusiastic and committed group of women. Events ranged from trying aromatherapy, juggling, or belly dancing to singing, writing and music making workshops and learning new skills and were well attended. A similar programme was arranged for 1994. Since then a small group of women, led by Pauline Buchanan, have managed to keep the spirit of International Women’s Week alive with a regular programme of events each year.

Celebrate International Women’s Day – Civic Lunch – Bradford
The Lady Mayoress of Bradford will be celebrating International Women’s Day with a civic lunch.
Lady Mayoress Colleen Middleton will be hosting the lunch at the Great Victoria Hotel, Bradford on Friday 6 March at 12pm. Speakers at the lunch will include two of the ‘Calendar Girls’, Angela Baker (Miss February) and Ros Fawcett (Miss November). The idea behind the original calendar was to raise funds for the local hospice following the death of Angela’s husband John from leukaemia.
Since the calendar there has been a Hollywood film and stage show based on the events and a great deal of money has been raised for Leukaemia Research.
The tickets for the lunch cost £20 and all proceeds will go to the Lord Mayor’s Appeal for the Bradford branch of the Alzheimer’s Society.
Lady Mayoress Colleen Middleton said: “This lunch will give women from across the city and district the opportunity to take part in what is now a global celebration for the achievements of women.”

Closing the gender gap – free conference – Scunthorpe
To mark International Women’s Day on 8 March 2009, North Lincolnshire Council is inviting local residents to a free conference on Thursday 5 March which aims to raise awareness of the gender gap in workplaces.
The one day event, to be held at the Kingsway Centre in Scunthorpe, is in partnership with North Lindsey College and will include presentations from guest speakers and interactive sessions.
The issue of gender equality is becoming more significant in society, both locally and nationally. This event aims to address local issues and give a better understanding of the needs of both men and women in the workplace.
Workshops include:
Increasing participation of learners in non-traditional areas
Aiming higher: fairplay for women
The Legal Framework
Gender and work life balance.
Guest speakers will include Carole Hassan, Chief Executive Local Government Yorkshire and Humber, who regularly speaks on the subject of diversity and will offer an interesting insight into her particular experiences as a female Chief Executive Officer.
Professor Beverley Alimo-Metcalfe, an organisation psychologist from the University of Bradford School of Management, will speak about her field of leadership research, and also as a patron of Women in Management.
Other speakers include Teresa Thomas, a leading employment law solicitor and Liz Bavidge who was awarded an OBE in 2007 for services to women.
And in the spirit of diversity, the speakers won’t just be women – as Steve Ward, the Equality and Diversity manager for the Learning and Skills Council Yorkshire and Humber will give a presentation. Steve has also worked in the voluntary sector, raising awareness on a range of disabilities.
And Bob Hulme, Men’s Health Co-ordinator at NHS North Lincolnshire will provide information about the role of fathers in the workplace.
Cllr Andrea Davison, Lead member for Diversity at North Lincolnshire Council said:
“I am pleased that this event is being held to raise awareness of issues in the workplace. Gender discrimination still occurs and by highlighting the issues we can confront them and hopefully make a difference.
“There will be a wide variety of speakers who between them have a great deal of experience in this area, and can offer valuable insights on how to deal with gender discrimination. The day is free and open to anyone, so I would like to encourage anyone who is interested to book a place now.”
